What is the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Test?
The CGC test, developed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), is a ten-part evaluation that assesses your dog's manners and obedience in everyday situations. Passing this test demonstrates that your dog is well-behaved at home and in public, making them a joy to be around.
The 10 Items of the CGC Test
To earn the CGC title, dogs must successfully complete all ten test items. Here’s what each item of the CGC dog training involves:
- Accepting a Friendly Stranger
Your dog must allow a friendly stranger to approach and speak to you without showing any signs of shyness or aggression. - Sitting Politely for Petting
Your dog should sit calmly as a stranger pets them, displaying good manners without jumping or excessive excitement. - Appearance and Grooming
This test item checks your dog's tolerance for grooming and handling, including brushing and having their ears and feet inspected. - Out for a Walk (Walking on a Loose Lead)
Your dog must walk politely on a loose leash, staying by your side without pulling or lagging. - Walking Through a Crowd
Your dog should navigate through a crowd calmly and confidently without becoming overly excited or anxious. - Sit and Down on Command and Staying in Place
Your dog must demonstrate the ability to sit and lie down on command and stay in place when instructed. - Coming When Called
Your dog should come to you promptly when called from a distance of at least 10 feet. - Reaction to Another Dog
During this test, your dog will need to behave politely around other dogs, showing no signs of aggression or excessive excitement. - Reaction to Distraction
Your dog must remain calm and composed when faced with common distractions, such as loud noises or moving objects. - Supervised Separation
Your dog will be left with a trusted person and should remain calm and well-behaved in your absence for a short period.
